Referral Value Calculator
Quantify what each happy customer's referrals are actually worth over time — the hidden revenue stream most contractors never measure, even though it's their cheapest source of new business.
Referral Value
New paying jobs one happy customer sends you over the time you stay in touch. Most trades: 1–3.
Profit % from your markup calculator — so the result is profit, not revenue.

How to Use This Tool
Enter average jobs per referral customer
How many new paying jobs does one happy customer typically send your way over the time you stay in touch? For most trades it's 1–3; for tight-knit markets it can be more.
Enter average job value
What's a typical job worth in revenue? Use your real average across your job mix.
Enter gross margin percentage
What percentage of that revenue is profit? Use the margin from your markup calculator so the result is profit, not revenue.
Read referral profit per customer
The calculator shows the total profit one customer's referrals generate over your relationship. Add this to their direct LTV and you see what each happy customer is truly worth.
The numbers behind your pricing
Referrals are the cheapest, highest-converting source of new business a contractor has — yet almost none measure what a referral is actually worth. Without that number, you can't decide how much effort to put into generating them, and you end up treating referrals as luck instead of a system. This calculator fixes that by quantifying the profit one happy customer's referrals generate over your relationship.
The math multiplies the number of referral jobs a customer sends by the average job value and your gross margin to get total referral profit. A customer who sends 2 jobs at $2,500 each at 40% margin generates $2,000 of referral profit — on top of whatever they paid you directly. Add that to their direct lifetime value and you see what a genuinely happy customer is worth, which is usually several times the first job.
Once you know the number, two things change. First, you can justify investing in referral systems — follow-up, review requests, referral incentives, staying top-of-mind — because the return is measurable and large. Second, you can compare referral economics to paid channels. If a referral customer costs $0 to acquire and generates $2,000 profit, and a paid lead costs $300 to acquire and generates $1,500 profit, referrals are the better investment per dollar of effort — and the calculator proves it.
The contractors who grow on referrals don't get lucky; they engineer it. They ask for referrals at the moment of peak satisfaction (right after a job well done), they make it easy (a text template, a review link), and they stay in touch so customers remember them when a neighbor asks. Measuring referral value is step one. Building the system is step two — and it's the cheapest growth lever most contractors leave sitting unused.
Frequently asked about this tool
Why calculate referral value separately from customer lifetime value?
Customer lifetime value measures what a customer pays you directly. Referral value measures the profit from the new customers they send you. Together they show what a happy customer is truly worth — and referrals are usually the cheapest revenue you'll ever earn.
How many referrals does an average customer send?
It varies by trade and market. Most residential trades see 1–3 referral jobs per happy customer over the relationship. Tight-knit or rural markets often see more. The number rises sharply when you actively ask and make referring easy.
Should I use revenue or profit for referral value?
Always use profit (revenue times gross margin). Using revenue overstates the value and leads to over-investing in referral systems. Profit is what actually reaches your pocket.
Is anything I enter saved?
No. This calculator runs entirely in your browser. Your numbers are never sent to a server, stored, or associated with you in any way.
You can have the best pricing in town — but it means nothing if your phone isn't ringing.
